Along with studies, a person's ability increases but at the same time, employment opportunities open up for him.  This is why tuition fees are considered a kind of investment.

Traditional means of livelihood such as land, small and cottage industries are dwindling day by day.  In such a situation the importance of the direct relationship between education and employment is increasing and hence the demand for education is also increasing.

That is why to know how much development has taken place in which states, one has to understand the development of education that took place there.  Gujarat's economic growth rate is very high but if you look at the state of education, it is disappointing.  The benefits of the economic development of the state are nowhere to be seen in the development of education.

In Gujarat, there is an improvement in the infrastructure required for education, but the reality is very different from what is seen in the government figures.  The level of quality of education has come down alarmingly.  There seems to be no improvement.  The literacy rate in the state was 69.14 per cent in 2001 which has gone up to 78.03 per cent in 2011.

But compared to other states, Gujarat is far behind.  In this list, Gujarat has dropped from 16th to 18th position.  The number of children enrolled in schools has increased, but even 5 per cent children between the ages of 11 and 14 are not able to reach school.  And Gujarat ranks 22nd in this list as compared to other states.

This means that many states of the country have made more progress than Gujarat.  The number of children who could not complete their studies up to class 4 was 22.30 per cent in 1999-2000.  As a result, it has come down to 1.97 per cent in 2014-15 and the number of students in class 5 to 7 has come down from 41.88 per cent to 6.61 per cent.

During these years, the number of schools run by a single teacher in the last few years is 1.5 per cent.  And the number of schools with the same class is 1.1 per cent.  According to the Gujarat government's Ministry of Education, 99.9 per cent of schools have separate toilets for girls and drinking water facilities.

99.7 per cent schools have electricity and 70.7 per cent schools have computer labs.  In terms of infrastructure, Gujarat is better than other states.  There has also been a lot of improvement in the last five years.

An organization working in the field of education in Gujarat conducts an annual survey called 'Asar' to assess the status of 'First Teacher'.  Government figures do not match the results of this survey.  According to the survey, 81.1 schools in Gujarat have separate toilets for girls and 84.6 per cent schools have access to drinking water.
